Rules of Golf

 As quoted on the reverse of the 2008-2011 Rules of Golf handbook;

"Play the ball as it lies.  Play the course as you find it.  And if you can’t do either, do what is fair.  But to do what is fair, you need to know the Rules of Golf."

The Rules of golf have been devised and written by the Royal and Ancient, with improvements made all the time relating to specific situations encountered on the golf course.

Did you know the first set of rules were written in 1744 and Rule 1 stated: "You must tee your ball within a club's length of the hole" - that has now been corrected.

All participants in this wonderful yet alarmingly frustrating sport should be aware of the rules of golf, and either be in possession of the Rules of Golf handbook or have access to a copy of the handbook in any format (own book, friend's book, online pdf).

You may even view, download and print them from this link PDF: Entire 2008 Rule Book (2Mb)

Should you come across a situation that is not encompassed within the Rules of Golf handbook you may check the "Decisions of Golf" from the Royal and Ancient website http://www.randa.org/rules/rulessub/decisions
